The entrance to the old post office building looks swanky enough. My girlfriend had some business to do and some friends to meet in Gothenburg, so I had decided to come along for the weekend
Läge och transport
At the square right next to the central train and bus station is Clarion Hotel Post. Plenty of taxis outside.
The Flygbussarna airport coach from GOT to central Gothenburg is 95 SEK. It stops at the other side of the station.
Incheckning/Utcheckning, service och statusförmåner
The reception staff ranged from young and inexperienced, to fairly young and quite professional. I did not use any kind of status card at check-in.
The room was booked a couple of days earlier and was the standard double room. Situated on the third floor which may be the lowest floor with rooms, it overlooked an empty asphalt back yard that was level with the window. The furnishings were nice and felt new. The TV was supposed to have internet and other entertainment options, but the only thing that worked were a rather small selection of TV channels. The bathroom looked and felt very fresh and clean. The standard rooms have no slippers, no bath robe.
A big annoyance was the noise from other rooms and from what must have been the lobby or the hallway. We decided not to complain and when we woke up in the morning we agreed we had slept OK after all.
Mat, dryck och faciliteter
There is a lively downstairs bar with sushi restaurant, as well as a slightly more traditional restaurant on the first floor. The bar is said to be good for singles. I went straight to the upstairs restaurant. It had live piano music which was quite loud but I got a slightly quieter table for one right away, overlooking the lobby. There were a couple of nice touches such as the napkin folded like an envelope. I had the Halv Special, a dish inspired by a local hot dog stand classic: Hot dog in a roll with mash on the side as well as a shrimp salad and fried onions. The dish was quite tasty and very large, even for a big eater. To wash it down I had an American ale from a glass branded with a Stockholm brewery. I am by no means a beer buff but I was surprised I wasn’t offered a local beer.
The breakfast was the highlight of our stay at Clarion Post. Freshly cut fruit, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, everything presented nicely. Coffee top-ups at the table.
On the ground floor there is a spa with a gym. I only used the latter. It is quite small and has a wellness feel to it. Most machines feel like they were made for rehab training. However, there is also a power rack for heavy lifting as well as some other quite interesting equipment, making it a nice gym. The changing rooms also feel lush and spacious, at least when you are the only person there. Just remember to bring a water bottle, or you will have to buy one.
The hotel also has a rooftop area with great views. No bar, but a heated outdoor pool.
The free internet connection does not work very well.
I would go for Clarion Post again, but I would not go for the cheapest room option, in hopes for some peace and quiet at night.
