Bilateral agreement on land mobile networks
The Department of Electronic Communications and the Agence Nationale des Fréquences, representing the Monegasque and French Governments respectively, this morning signed an agreement to coordinate land mobile network frequencies in border areas, in the presence of Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, the Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development.
The new text, which replaces the previous agreement signed between the two countries in 2011, is a response to the need for bilateral coordination of new technologies such as 4G, and the new frequencies allocated to these networks (700, 800MHz and 2.6GHz).
"This agreement follows the initiative by the Prince's Government, which granted Monaco Telecom permission to deploy its own mobile network, and at the same time invited French mobile operators to strengthen their coverage in the Principality in order to improve the services provided to their users on our territory", emphasised Marie-Pierre Gramaglia.
The latest agreement marks an important step in efforts to shape the regulatory framework governing the operation of mobile networks, on both sides of the border. Licence contracts between the State and authorised French operators in the Principality will be based on this framework.
In practice, during the course of 2016, French operators will deploy new base stations in the Principality to improve their customers' mobile reception.

It should also be noted that the performance of the other three operators (Bouygues Telecom, Free and SFR) has improved since 2016, in line with a request made to them by the Minister of State. Thus, for telephone calls made or received, the exterior coverage rate of these operators is now higher than 98%.
